Like R. Robot, I used to be a leftist -- during my university days. In '88, as a pro-Dukakis stunt, we stole a 16' by 16' block of cheese from the Viticulture and Dairy Studies department at UT and hauled it out to the quadrangle at midnight, protesting the Reagan administration's "Swiss cheese economy." But the idiotarian bent of the Left began to grate at us. For instance, we wondered as we camped outside the administration building one bone-chilling 7:30 a.m., why had the College Democrats scheduled the Swiss Cheese Haul during the hunger strike for federal tuition loans?

But mainly it was slanderous lies like those spread by Scandinavian blogger I Daligt Sallskap that gnawed at our fledgling political consciences.

This is the kind of nonsense that makes me glad I'm a sensible Jerry Falwell Democrat who believes passionately in liberalism, but hates wasteful social programs and immigrants. I'm sorry, but now isn't the time for Finlandizing the people's struggle against living in fear. People, we are at war. There's just too much at stake to be undermining a champion of humanitarian intervention like R. Robot, the last of the true liberals. When Saddam trains his supergun on this man's country and blackmails the West into letting Islamo-despots seize control of the Finnish government, people like Klipspringer will probably be dancing in the streets to their S.P.O.C.K. albums. Bara pa skoj, indeed.

We've heard a lot from Glen (who now runs RobotWatch) about how R. Robot's "posturing" is supposedly "jingoistic," how he is "shoddy in his reasoning." But that's out of context. Let's look at what Robot really said:

Now, that's not something you can easily dismiss, especially considering what happened in New Jersey.

Of course, to those of us who know him from his days at the University of North Texas at Denton, Glen is a man known to play fast and loose with the truth, and he knows it. That explains his meltdown at the school debate championships. The question was whether we should invade Grenada. Glen, a rising star of the College Democrats, was going on about "nuclear winter" and openly calling for the violent replacement of the Reagan Administration with a Board of Communist Comptrollers. But R. Robot, in his usual expansive, waggish style, won the crowd over effortlessly with his wonkish knowledge of State Department trivia.

Flash forward to 2002. R., of course, is writing for Ink Syndicate. Glen is just another MySQL programmer with an Apple IIGS ROM nostalgia page and an R. Robot-bashing blog. Makes more sense, doesn't it?
